Chichagof Island meets the waters of the Icy Strait along the northern reaches of the Tongass National Forest. This coastline is defined by the sheltered Whitestone Harbor, a primary maritime entry point into this portion of the Alexander Archipelago. The landscape rises sharply from the shore into high-elevation terrain, including the landform known as Hippo Back.
