The Ohio River carves a deep valley between Indiana and Kentucky in this mid-century survey, separating the high ridges of Posey and Taylor townships from the growing industrial and transport corridor of southwest Jefferson County. On the Kentucky bank, the Illinois Central railroad and the Dixie Highway serve a string of small river communities including Kosmosdale, Orell, and Meadow Lawn. This area is defined by its transition from the steep, creek-cut hillsides of McHarry Hill and Knob Creek Ridge to the flat bottomlands near Pond Creek. To the south, the landscape is marked by the presence of federal land, including the Fort Knox Military Reservation and the Knob Creek Naval Reservation. Numerous rural institutions such as St Peters Ch and Elizabeth Ch reflect the established social fabric of these riverfront townships during the early 1950s.
