Lincoln National Forest and the Capitan Mountains Wilderness dominate the southern half of this landscape, where the terrain breaks into a series of deep drainages including Kyle Harrison Canyon and Peppin Canyon. The northern portion transition into a high plateau characterized by a dense network of natural basins and catchment areas like Cactus Flat Lake, Deep Lake, and Antelope Lake. These water sources were critical for the early ranching operations that defined this part of New Mexico.

Evidence of early 20th-century rural infrastructure is centered near the Richardson Canyon area, most notably the Richardson School and the nearby Kyle Harrison Spring. The Transwestern Road provides one of the few primary routes through this rugged high-country terrain, which is otherwise marked by remote trails like the North Trail and numerous unnamed gravel pits and wells that once supported local industry and homesteading.
