The Spoon River meanders through the southwestern corner of this Fulton County landscape, where the city of Lewistown serves as a primary hub of settlement. To the north, the town of Cuba is centered around a traditional grid, bordered by Laswell Br and the Cuba Cem. The terrain between these two centers is characterized by the complex drainage of Big Cr and its many tributaries, creating a dissected upland dotted with numerous small family and community burial grounds. These sites, including Saunders Cem, Connor Cem, and McNeill Cem, provide essential anchor points for genealogical research in the region. Local landmarks such as Depler Springs and Carthage Lake Number 1 highlight the historical importance of water resources in the development of this Illinois prairie and river-bluff environment.
