Beaverhead National Forest defines the southern portion of this landscape, dominated by the high elevations of Lima Peaks and the 10,961-foot summit of Garfield Mountain. The topography is characterized by a series of north-flowing drainages including Alder Creek, Truax Creek, and Willow Creek, which carve deep valleys through the mountain range.

Evidence of seasonal high-country activity is found at the Deep Creek Cow Camp, connected to the lower valleys by an extensive Pack Trail system. These trails follow the contours above Deep Creek and Little Sheep Creek, providing access to critical water sources such as Lower Deep Creek Spring and Sawmill Spring. The map documents a transition from the high alpine peaks to the spring-fed basins of the lower foothills during the mid-1960s.
