Shin Oak Mountain and Magill Mountain dominate this Central Texas landscape along the border of San Saba and Llano counties. Surveyed in the mid-1950s, the terrain is defined by a dense network of seasonal drainages, including the North Fork Cherokee Creek and Cherokee Creek, which carve through the Potter Flats and Cedar Hollow. This was a landscape of remote ranching and water management, where numerous isolated windmills were essential for survival on the scrubland.
