Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park dominates the western half of this landscape, preserving the geography of the 1864 Atlanta Campaign including Kennesaw Mountain, Pigeon Hill, and Cheatham Hill. By the mid-1950s, the surrounding area shows significant transition as Marietta expands toward Smyrna and Fair Oaks. Post-war urbanization is evident in the purple-tinted extensions of Marietta and the massive footprint of Dobbins Air Force Base to the southeast.

Institutional history is well-represented through the presence of the National Cemetery, the Confederate Cemetery, and numerous segregated-era educational facilities such as Lemon St High Sch and Winn Street School. The Louisville and Nashville railroad corridor remains the primary industrial axis, serving the community through stations at Elizabeth and Westoak. Small rural settlements like Blackwells and Milford remain distinct on the periphery, linked by a network of historic roads including Burnt Hickory Road and Stilesboro Road.
