Wrangell-Saint Elias National Preserve and the adjoining Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park dominate this landscape in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area. The topography is defined by the massive glacial and fluvial systems of south-central Alaska, most notably the sprawling Barnard Glacier and the braided channels of the Chitina River. The transition from the high-altitude ice of the glacier to the river valley is marked by numerous drainage systems, including Clear Stream and several creeks such as Iron Cr, Lime Cr, and Granite Cr. The absence of developed roads or settlements on this 2017 survey emphasizes the wilderness character of the Copper River region. Researchers can trace the complex hydrography of the Chugach and Wrangell Mountains, where Quartz Cr joins the larger drainage networks that have shaped this protected environment.
