The coastal environment of the North Slope Borough meets the Arctic waters of the Chukchi Sea along this northern stretch of Alaska. The shoreline is characterized by the complex hydrology of Peard Bay and the sheltered waters of Tachinisok Inlet, which dominate the western coastal profile. Inland, the landscape is defined by the winding course of Papigak Cr, cutting through a terrain marked by numerous small lakes and thermokarst features typical of the Arctic coastal plain. This 2014 survey illustrates the delicate interface between the tundra and the sea, showing the intricate network of water bodies and seasonal drainages that sustain this high-latitude ecosystem.
