Monango stands as a rail-driven settlement in the late nineteenth century, where two major rail lines intersect on the Dakota prairie. Surveyed in 1892 under the direction of J.W. Powell, the landscape is defined by the heavy presence of the Minneapolis St. Paul and Sault St. Marie R. R. and the Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul R. R.. These competing lines underscore the rapid expansion of transport infrastructure across Dickey County during this era of early statehood.
