About this map

Katmai National Monument defines the rugged topography of this interior Alaskan landscape, mapped through aerial photography in the early 1950s. The northern reaches of the monument are delineated by a clear National Monument Boundary that bisects the northern quadrangle. Glacial activity and high-elevation drainage patterns are evident, particularly with the flow of the Hook Glacier in the southern portion of the sheet. The hydrological network is dominated by the braided paths of the Savonoski River and the Kamishak River, which cut through the steep contour intervals. Unlike more settled coastal regions, this area is characterized by its total absence of permanent settlements or roads, focusing instead on the raw geomorphology of the Aleutian Range and the watercourses like Hardscrabble Creek that define the watershed.
