Arctic National Wildlife Refuge encompasses this stretch of the North Slope, where the coastal plain begins its ascent into the northern foothills. The Sadlerochit Mountains dominate the southern portion of the sheet, providing a stark topographical contrast to the expansive wetlands and braided drainage systems to the north. These uplands are the source for Last Creek and other small tributaries that feed into the larger river systems.
