About this map

Mc Faddin National Wildlife Refuge dominates this coastal landscape where the Texas shoreline meets the Gulf of Mexico. The area is defined by a complex network of wetlands and tidal drainage, including Mud Lake and the winding Mud Bayou. Engineering efforts to manage this low-lying environment are evident in the numerous levee structures that line the northern reaches of the quadrangle. The Intracoastal Waterway cuts a straight path across the marsh, serving as a critical artery for maritime commerce just inland from the coast. Subtle signs of human activity in this saturated terrain appear in the form of a trail leading toward a Corral and a remote Turn near the shoreline. The convergence of Chambers and Jefferson County lines further north illustrates the political geography of this largely uninhabited coastal preserve.
