Myrtle Lake and Ban Lake anchor this glaciated expanse of the Superior National Forest in northern St. Louis County. The landscape is defined by a dense network of waterways, including the Pelican River and the winding Elbow River, which connects Little Elbow Lake to the larger Elbow Lake in the southeast. While permanent settlements are absent from this wilderness area, a complex system of historical and modern transit routes crisscrosses the terrain.
