About this map

St Mary-of-the-Woods College and its namesake village anchor the southwestern corner of this survey, surrounded by the winding waters of Sugar Creek and Little Sugar Creek. This landscape west of the Wabash River illustrates a mid-century transition from rural coal-mining origins to suburban expansion near the northern edge of Terre Haute. Mining history is evident in the Pine Ridge Mine Pond and Grant Mine Pond, while the former route of the Erie and Wabash Canal can still be traced along the river's eastern bank near Spelterville. Transportation networks define the area's development, from the industrial corridors of the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific railroad to the rural junctions at New Goshen and Shepardsville. Local community life is marked by several neighborhood landmarks, including Bethlehem Ch, Trinity Ch, and the extensive grounds of Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
