The Allegheny River corridor dominates this 2013 study of the industrial and residential landscape northeast of Pittsburgh. Heavy infrastructure, including the Pennsylvania Turnpike Interchange 5 and the C. L. Schmitt Bridge, connects a string of riverfront communities from Tarentum and Glassmere down to Springdale and Acmetonia. These settlements are tightly packed between the river and the rising hills, where Fourteen Mile Island and Twelvemile Island divide the main channel.
