About this map

Newton serves as the central hub of this East Mississippi landscape, where the Kansas City Southern railway intersects with a network of local roads and creek systems. To the west, the settlement of Lawrence sits along the Potterchitto Cr, while the southern reaches of the map transition into the protected timberlands of the Bienville National Forest near Nance Hill. The area is notably rich in memorial sites, including the Doolittle Confederate Cem and Masonic Cem in the town proper, as well as the Evans Cem further south near Bethel. This geography reveals a rural community defined by its watercourses, such as Bogue Falema Cr and Bethel Cr, which historically shaped the placement of outlying communities like Calhoun. Aviation history is also represented at James H Easom Field on the eastern edge of the survey.
