The Yellowstone River meanders through a broad floodplain at the junction of Hammond Valley and Howard Valley, defining the geographic character of this Rosebud County landscape. In the late 1960s, the area's transportation infrastructure was dominated by two major competing rail lines: the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific running north of the river and the Burlington Northern skirting the southern bluffs through the settlement of Nichols.

Away from the fertile river bottoms, the terrain transitions into a complex network of coulees and ridges, including McGraw Coulee and East Spring Coulee. Evidence of local ranching and early industrial exploration appears in landmarks like the Hardin Ranch and a remote Drill Hole near Big Porcupine Creek. A network of irrigation canals supports the agriculture in the valleys, while natural features like Cold Spring and Armells Creek indicate the critical role of water management in this high-plains environment.
