About this map

Lake Ontario defines the northern horizon of this Orleans County landscape, where the waters of Oak Orchard Creek and Marsh Creek converge before reaching the lake at Point Breeze. In the late 19th century, the regional economy was driven by two major transportation arteries running parallel to the shore. To the south, the Erie Canal passes through quarrying and shipping hubs like Hulberton and Hindsburg, while the Rome Watertown and Ogdensburg R. R. cuts through the center of the quadrangle, serving local stops at Waterport Sta. and Carlton Sta.. The historic Ridge Road provides a terrestrial link between the inland settlements of Fairhaven and East Gaines, tracing the natural elevated shoreline of a prehistoric glacial lake. This era represents the peak of canal-side industry and the established railroad network before modern highways reorganized the rural towns of Carlton, Kendall, and Murray.
