About this map

The South Branch Potomac River carves a deep valley through the Appalachian ridges of the Eastern Panhandle, defining the landscape of Hardy and Hampshire counties. In the southern portion of the quadrangle, the river passes through the narrow gorge known as The Trough, a prominent geological feature situated between River Ridge and Sawmill Ridge. Small agricultural settlements like Old Fields and McNeill occupy the fertile bottomlands along the river, while Purgitsville serves as a northern upland hub near Mill Creek.
