The Snake River carves a deep canyon through this landscape on the border of Oregon and Idaho, where the Union Pacific railroad tracks hug the western bank through Baker County. This early 1950s survey documents a rugged river corridor punctuated by a series of treacherous whitewater features including Bay Horse Rapids, Shoofly Rapids, Eagle Rapids, and the evocatively named Whisky Rapids.

Evidence of early 20th-century industry and community is found at the Gypsum site and the small settlement at Prevost. On the Idaho side, the landscape is defined by the drainage systems of Rock Creek and Perkins Creek, leading toward the Henley Basin. The presence of the Hibbard Creek School in the northern portion of the map suggests a once-active rural community supported by the nearby waters of Hibbard Creek.
