Onward and its surrounding Cass County landscape are defined by a complex drainage network that has historically supported agriculture in north-central Indiana. The northern edge of the region is anchored by the Wabash River, where the settlement of Lewisburg overlooks the river's path. Moving south, the terrain is segmented by numerous watercourses, including Little Deer Cr, Rock Cr, and Pipe Cr, alongside man-made improvements like Government Ditch and Sixby Ditch. These waterways illustrate the intensive efforts to manage the land for cultivation.
