The Missouri River and its confluence with the Osage River dominate this Central Missouri landscape, illustrating a critical junction of transport and topography in the late 1960s. Along the southern bank, the Missouri Pacific railroad parallels the river, passing through the settlement of Osage City. To the north, the Missouri Kansas Texas line serves the community of Wainwright near the base of the Summit bluffs.

Evidence of local industry is clear through various quarries and the substantial grounds of the Missouri Intermediate Reformatory situated on the heights overlooking the river plain.
