Newberry Crater dominates this volcanic landscape, with the high rim rising to the Paulina Peak Lookout. The caldera basin contains Paulina Lake, a deep blue water body that feeds the westward-flowing Paulina Creek. This survey, field-checked in the early 1960s with 1970s revisions, illustrates the specialized recreation and infrastructure within the Deschutes National Forest, including the Guard Station and multiple camps like Paulina Lake Campground.

Geological activity is recorded through extensive Lava flows and the notable Surveyors Ice Cave in the southern reaches of the quadrangle. The terrain transitions from the steep, rugged rim of the crater to the drainage of Paulina Creek Falls, where the water drops through a series of Falls. Early forest management and resource extraction are represented by the Cinder Pit and a network of unimproved roads and the Paulina Peak Trail.
