Mississinewa Reservoir dominates this landscape on the border of Miami and Wabash Counties, reflecting a period of major hydrological change in North Central Indiana. This 1969 field check captures the area just as the valley was being transformed for flood control, with the reservoir's normal pool elevation noted at 737 feet. Along the banks, the Frances Slocum State Forest and several state recreation areas provide a buffer for the waters that now cover portions of the historic river valley near the settlement of Peoria.

Away from the water, the agricultural and community roots of the region are clearly visible. The Chesapeake and Ohio railroad cuts a diagonal path through the south, passing the village of Santa Fe and its neighbor New Santa Fe. Local history is preserved in landmarks like the Cliffs of the Seven Double Pillars and numerous family and community burial grounds, including the New Hope Cem and Woodlawn Ch Cem.
