Custer National Forest encompasses much of this southeastern Montana landscape, where the terrain is defined by a dense network of upland drainages and ridges. The area is characterized by an extensive system of man-made water management features, including Canyon Reservoir, Basin Reservoir, and the Lyon Cr Divide Reservoir. These developments, alongside numerous named springs like Cool Mine Spring and Mud Turtle Spring, indicate the historical importance of water security for livestock and land use in this arid region.
