The central urban core of Phoenix expands rapidly in the mid-20th century, reaching north toward Indian School Road and south toward the Salt River. The landscape is a dense grid of residential growth interspersed with civic institutions like the Heard Museum and Phoenix Jr College. A high concentration of burial grounds, including Greenwood Cem and Rosedale Cem, marks the western edge of the downtown district.

Industrial and transit corridors follow the Southern Pacific and A T & S F rail lines, which cut through the city toward the sprawling Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in the southeast. North of the river, an extensive network of irrigation infrastructure like the Grand Canal and San Francisco Canal North Branch reveals the city's agricultural foundations as they are slowly overtaken by suburban developments like Longview Sch and Monte Vista Sch.
