High desert draws and high alpine lakes converge in this 1981 snapshot of western Wyoming. The town of Pinedale sits at the base of the Wind River Range, where Pine Creek drains the massive Fremont Lake. The landscape transition is stark, moving from the sagebrush of the Mesa and the irrigation-fed valleys near Cora and Boulder to the glaciated peaks of the Bridger Wilderness. For historians, the southern portion of the map is particularly significant, showing the exact paths of the Oregon Trail and the Emigrant Trail as they navigate the high plains near the Big Sandy River. These routes are marked by several Historical Monuments, tracing the movement of pioneers across the Continental Divide. The map also captures the eastern extent of the Wind River Indian Reservation and the shared boundary between Sublette and Fremont Counties.
