Idaho State University anchors the eastern slopes of the valley where the Portneuf River and the Union Pacific rail lines dictate the urban layout of Pocatello. In the early 1970s, the city core is defined by a dense grid of streets including Main St and Fifth Ave, flanked by institutional landmarks like St Anthony Hospital and Bannock Memorial Hospital. The transition from urban center to wilderness is abrupt, as the residential blocks give way to the rising elevations of the Pocatello Range and the protected lands of the Caribou National Forest. Numerous neighborhood schools such as Bonneville Sch and Jefferson Sch are scattered throughout the northern neighborhoods, while the south is dominated by recreation and topography, from the Riverside Municipal Golf Course to the high vantage of Kinport Peak.
