About this map

Old Tampa Bay dominates this mid-century coastal survey, capturing a period of significant urban and military expansion along the Florida gulf coast. The eastern shore is defined by the extensive Mac Dill Air Force Base, which occupies the southern tip of the Interbay Peninsula. To the north, the industrial character of Port Tampa is evident through the Seaboard Coast Line rail connections and the Port Tampa Dock. Across the water, the growing residential and recreational landscape of St Petersburg is visible, including the planned waterfront developments of Snell Isle and Shore Acres. This 1969 photorevision highlights the transformation of the Pinellas County shoreline, where islands like Benjamin Island and Christmas Island sit adjacent to burgeoning neighborhoods and local landmarks such as Butterfly Lake and the Whitted Airport.
