The settlements of Project City and Central Valley serve as the primary residential hubs, while smaller locales like Mountain Gate, McColl, and the Portal Inn are clustered along the critical transportation corridor formed by the Southern Pacific railroad and early highways. The 1969 photorevisions, marked in purple, illustrate the rapid development of Shasta Junior College and the expanding road network near Newtown.

Away from the town centers, the terrain is deeply carved by the West Fork Stillwater Creek and Moody Creek. Landmarks such as Miller Buttes and Fish Mtn rise above the drainage basins, while the northern boundary of the map transitions into the Shasta National Forest.
