The Kabetogama State Forest dominates this northern landscape, where the Koochiching Co St Louis Co Boundary cuts through dense woodland and marshy terrain. The transportation history of the region is etched into the earth by the Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific railroad, which runs diagonally through the center past the siding at Arbutus. Parallel to this active line, an Old Railroad Grade and various seasonal routes like the Winter Trail suggest a legacy of timber extraction and remote transit. Water defines the topography, with the East Branch and main Rat Root River winding through the forest toward Pearl Lake. On higher ground, the Kabetogama Lookout Tower and Indian Hill provide rare vertical relief in a territory characterized by extensive peatlands and numerous Gravel Pits.
