The area is defined by the winding course of the Boeuf River and a network of sluggish waterways and wetlands including Binion Brake, Purvis Brake, and Ethridge Brake. These brakes reflect the lower Mississippi Delta's hydrology, where cypress and tupelo once dominated the seasonally flooded depressions between the river's natural levees.

Small agricultural hubs like Start, Girard, and Dehleo are connected by a system of rural routes such as Overlan Stage Rd and Old River Rd.
