The Republican River winds through the northern half of this Cloud County landscape, shaping a wide valley defined by its tributaries and the small settlements of Rice and Cook. The terrain transitions from the river bottom into the dissected uplands of central Kansas, where Twin Mounds stands as a prominent topographical landmark in the southeast. A network of rural section-line roads, such as Union Rd and Oak Rd, connects scattered farmsteads and a series of community burial grounds including Gotland Cem and Rice Cem.
