The Kings River carves a deep, winding course through this Ozark terrain, defining the local geography as it flows past Mason Bend toward the Osage Creek confluence. Near the northern edge, the edge of Eureka Springs and the recreation-oriented Lake Lucerne stand in contrast to the heavily dissected wilderness to the south. The landscape is characterized by narrow ridges and numerous named hollows, including Hollingsworth Hollow and Turpentine Hollow, which reflect early timber or agricultural extraction.

A significant portion of the southern area is dedicated to the Mc Ilroy State Game Management Area, where the small settlement of Rockhouse sits near the river. Researchers will find interest in the transition from the developed Lake Lucerne Airport area to the more remote heights of Trigger Mountain and Round Mountain, illustrating the rural character of the Carroll and Madison County border in the early 1970s.
