About this map

The Yukon River dominates the southern reaches of this landscape, its broad channel flanked by a complex network of side channels including Ickes Slough and the winding Thirtytwo Kazyga Slough. Rising sharply from the northern wetlands and riverbanks are prominent topographic landmarks such as Ungalak Mtn and Bend Mtn. This 2017 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey captures a wild stretch of the Kusilvak Census Area where the massive river system transitions from open water to the steep, rising elevation of the interior hills. The mapping of these sloughs is particularly vital for understanding the shifting hydrology and traditional transit corridors used in this part of western Alaska.
