Rye and Colorado City sit at the eastern foothills of the San Isabel National Forest, where the high plains meet the mountain front in the late 1960s. The settlement at Rye shows a tight-knit community structure, including a High School and the Brookside Cemetery, while the newer development of Colorado City to the east exhibits more modern curvilinear street patterns. The hydrology of the area is defined by a complex network of waterways, including Greenhorn Creek, Graneros Creek, and the many forks of Muddy Creek, which are supplemented by the Standard Ditch for water management. Notable landmarks such as the Fish Hatchery and local resources like several Gravel Pits illustrate the local economy. To the west, the landscape rises into the Huckleberry Hills and Table Mountain, with the Bartlett Trail winding through the forest near the Pueblo and Huerfano County line.
