About this map

Lemont and the surrounding industrial corridor are defined by the convergence of major waterways and rail lines in the mid-1920s. The landscape is dominated by the parallel routes of the Des Plaines River, the Illinois and Michigan Canal, and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, which carved a path for commerce through the Lyons and Lemont townships. This 1925 survey illustrates the density of transportation infrastructure, including the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe RR and the Alton and Chicago Highway.
