Texas State University - San Marcos and the northern edge of San Marcos anchor this 2010 landscape, where the Balcones Escarpment's influence is evident in the transition from urban streets to winding hill country roads. The hydrology of the region is centered on the headwaters of the San Marcos River, emerging from Spring Lake at the Aquarena Dam. To the north, the Blanco River meanders through more rural terrain near Centex and the southern outskirts of Kyle. Cultural and civic history is concentrated in the Hays County Courthouse Historic District and the Belvin Street Historic District, while industrial heritage is marked by the Belger-Cahill Lime Kiln. The area between the rivers is characterized by significant cemetery sites and residential growth extending toward the Wyatt Airport and various ranch lands.
