About this map

Sandisfield and the surrounding Berkshire highlands appear here at the close of the nineteenth century, defined by a network of small villages and complex water systems. The West Branch Farmington River carves a deep valley through the eastern portion of the sheet, while the massive Otis Reservoir and smaller bodies like Lake Garfield and Benton Lake dominate the upland basins. The era's transportation infrastructure is visible in the stage and wagon roads connecting hamlets such as Montville, New Boston, and Southfield. In the southern portion of the map, the Reading & New England route crosses the state boundary line into Norfolk, Connecticut. The terrain is marked by numerous family-named peaks including Kingsbury Mt, Filley Mt, and Abbey Hill, illustrating a landscape of established hill-country settlement before the industrial shifts of the twentieth century.
