Stones Store and the central village of Sanville anchor this mid-1960s survey of the rural borderlands between Patrick and Henry Counties. The landscape is defined by the winding course of the North Mayo River and numerous tributaries like Koger Creek and Blackberry Creek. The social fabric of these tobacco-growing foothills is evidenced by a high density of country sanctuaries, including Old Center Ch, Goodwill Ch, and County Line Ch.

Modern infrastructure begins to appear with the Blue Ridge Airport in the south, yet much of the area remains accessible only via winding secondary roads and a Jeep Trail near the river. Significant elevation changes are marked by Hoppen Mountain in the northwest, overlooking a network of family-named settlements such as Pannill Fork and Dillons Fork. This document preserves the locations of dozens of family cemeteries and small rural landmarks like Hales Ponds before later 20th-century development altered the character of the region.
