Catskill State Park encompasses a high-relief landscape of peaks and narrow creek valleys during this mid-century period. The valley floors are centers of activity, where the New York Central railroad follows the course of Esopus Creek through Shandaken, Big Indian, and Pine Hill. These mountain hamlets serve as gateways to the high summits, with Slide Mtn and Panther Mtn dominating the southern and eastern horizons. Local infrastructure, such as School No 2 and School No 4, reflects the dispersed but established community life in the hollows.
