The North Fork South Platte River carves a central corridor through this mountain landscape, anchoring the valley settlements of Shawnee and Glenisle. Following the river and the Santa Maria Rd alignment, the area is defined by its series of deep gulches and high peaks within the Pike National Forest. Evidence of early settlement and community history is preserved at the Shawnee Cem and Baldwin Cem, which sit above the river valley. To the south, the terrain rises sharply toward the Platte River Mountains and Kenosha Mountains, where high-altitude landmarks like Craig Park and Shawnee Peak mark the transition into the high backcountry. The northern reach of the map is punctuated by Derringer Peak and the residential road networks of Highland Park, showing the blend of remote forest land and established mountain communities.
