Shelley Peak stands as the central landmark in this mid-1960s survey of the high backcountry where Catron and Grant counties meet. The landscape is defined by the deep drainages of the Gila Wilderness, where Mogollon Creek and its South Fork carve through the Mogollon Mountains. This area was mapped just after the mid-century, capturing a network of primitive access routes including the Mogollon Pack Trail and Lookout Trail.
