1952 Map of Silica

About this map

Bengal and Silica are central nodes in this transition zone between the Mesabi Iron Range and the northern timberlands. The landscape is defined by its industrial and transport arteries, including the Burlington Northern and the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range railroads, which facilitated the movement of ore and timber. Evidence of local mining activity appears near the northern boundary with a Tailings Pond and Gravel Pits north of Noyes. Much of the southern terrain is protected within the Floodwood Memorial Forest, where an Old Railroad Grade suggests the legacy of earlier logging operations. Numerous water bodies like Sand Lake, Coons Lake, and Bengal Lake are interspersed with distinct elevations such as Blueberry Hill and Bear Hill, illustrating the glacial character of this region.
