About this map

The Papago Indian Reservation dominates the western half of this landscape, where the North Comobabi Mountains and South Comobabi Mountains rise from the desert floor. To the east, the sprawling city of Tucson begins to encroaches upon the Tucson Mountains and the borders of Saguaro National Monument. This 1994 edition illustrates the desert's industrial and agricultural activity, with the massive Silver Bell Mine complex and Copper Butte situated in the northern peaks, while the Southern Pacific railroad follows the Santa Cruz River corridor near Marana. Smaller settlements like San Luis, Ko Vaya, and Schuchk are scattered across the valley plains, connected by a network of desert washes such as Brawley Wash and Aguirre Wash that define the drainage of the Avra Valley.
