The Ouachita River defines the geography of this South Arkansas landscape, snaking through the lowlands where Calhoun Co and Ouachita Co meet. The river's winding path is punctuated by numerous named shallows and bends, including Blue Beach Shoals, Cold Bite Shoal, and Newport Shoals. To the south, the terrain transitions toward the historically significant oil-producing region near Smackover, where N Fork Smackover Cr and Smackover Creek drain the bottomlands near Joyce City.
