About this map

Standing Rock Indian Reservation encompasses much of this 1970s landscape, where the meandering Cannonball River carves a deep valley through the prairie. The topography is defined by the sharp rise of Dogtooth in the north and the expansive drainage of Porcupine Creek to the south. An Old Railroad Grade runs along the northern edge, tracing a path through the transition between Morton and Sioux counties. Genealogists and local historians will find the locations of Fairview Cem and St Gabriel Cem particularly significant, as they represent the sparse but established community footprints in this river-valley region of the Great Plains.
