About this map

The Connecticut River Div. of the Boston and Maine R.R. anchors this late 19th-century industrial and agricultural landscape, following the river valley through a corridor of heavy manufacturing and rail junctions. Dense urban grids are established at Springfield and Holyoke, while the Chicopee River provides the power for outlying industrial pockets at Chicopee Falls and Indian Orchard. To the west, the steep elevations of the Holyoke Range, including Mt. Tom and the isolated Proven Mt., overlook a patchwork of rural hamlets such as Feeding Hills and Ireland Parish.
