Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia, anchors this high-elevation study of the Allegheny Mountains within the Monongahela National Forest. The landscape is defined by its deep hollows and prominent ridges, including Elk Mtn and Grassy Mtn, which separate the headwaters of numerous mountain streams. The settlement of Cherry Grove sits along the North Fork South Branch Potomac River in the southeast, where the terrain relents slightly near Teter Gap.
